Russell T Davies Dismisses Fans’ Biggest Complaint About Doctor Who: ‘I’d Do It Again’
There will never be a single canon event in this show.
No matter how many decades Doctor Who airs for, it continues to be one of the most popular series in the UK on its way to take over the entire world. Fun and dynamic adventures of the alien called the Doctor and their companions around time and space are equally as captivating for grownups as they are for kids, which grants Doctor Who a loyal audience.
However, the love that so many people hold for the show doesn’t mean they don’t acknowledge its weaknesses. Every era of the show has had its ups and downs, but for as long as creators were listening to fans’ concerns, the show could progress smoothly. There is, however, one strong flaw of Russell T Davies’ reign that the showrunner refuses to fix.
Why Does Doctor Who Contradicts Itself?
Put simply, everything you see in Doctor Who is the result of something 'wibbly wobbly, timey wimey' happening within the show's universe. Although based on real history and some well-known periods, people and events, Doctor Who has never aimed to be realistic, and the Doctor himself has always written his own history.
That said, fans would be happy if the show actually followed through on everything it established. However, the world of Doctor Who is constantly changing, and pretty much anything you may have seen in the past could easily be fixed to fit a different story in the future.
The worst part of it all is that Russell T Davies, the current showrunner of the series and the first person to pick it up after the long 90s hiatus, has no intention of ever changing that. He reassures fans that he will use the 'timey wimey' excuse again if he has to.
“It's destroyed Atlantis three times in its history and if someone came to me tomorrow with a great story about the destruction of Atlantis, I'd do it again. <...> You'd just put in one line, 'Oh, a glitch in time, we're here again!” he said to Radio Times.
While this may be frustrating for some viewers who want at least some stability in Doctor Who's extensive lore, others see it as a bonus. No other show has such a wide range of possibilities when it comes to adventure settings and possible villains for the protagonist to face.
