Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow’s Real-Life Dialogue Made It to Iron Man’s Final Cut

Many were skeptical about Robert Downey Jr. taking up the leading role in the MCU’s Iron Man (mostly because of his bad reputation at the time), but director Jon Favreau insisted — and was right all along. Since his appearance as Tony Stark Robert Downey Jr. has managed to revive his career bringing it all up till getting his first Oscar this year.

Now that the actor is having his Stark-coded moment of success, Favreau reminisced about Downey Jr.’s time in the MCU till the latter left it in 2019 — and brought up some memories about the actor’s good relationships with his co-star, Gwyneth Paltrow.

The director revealed that the chemistry between actors was so obvious and natural that one of their real-life conversations eventually ended up being included in the movie.

Favreau admitted that he felt like a very good student who was literally taking notes every time the actors talked to each other on the set.

First at a script reading and then already in rehearsal Gwyneth corrected Downey Jr.’s line that said ‘This looks like Jackson Pollock's spring period’ — but instead of changing it in the script the creators left it as it was just adding Paltrow’s character’s correction already in the shot.

Favreau said he’d found such a solution very entertaining as it apparently added some sweet little argument-like interaction between characters.

Even though, as the director reassures, they didn’t even need it at first — the chemistry between Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow was so visible that it could probably ooze through the screens without any additional real-life-inspired scenes.
