Rings of Power Still Has a Chance to Shine: Look at Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad
Now that rumors claim the controversial LotR show has been preemptively renewed for a third season, let's take a breath here.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is not exactly an undisputable hit Amazon hoped it would become. While not a straight-up flop, the show has received a lukewarm response from critics and fans, with the latter being particularly angry about Rings of Power "butchering" John R.R. Tolkien's legacy.
Still, Amazon seems to be completely okay with pouring money into the project and mapping out a five-season future for it. Now, Fellowship of Fans has claimed that the show has allegedly been greenlit for a third season, even though the second chapter has not even wrapped filming yet.
Surprisingly, aside from the predictable new wave of hate towards the show, there is a spark of optimism among Middle-earth fans. Redditors on r/LOTR_on_Prime have suggested that The Rings of Power still has a chance to become its own sort of a cultural phenomenon.
Some fans recalled that such behemoths of today's pop culture as Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad were not particularly popular before their second and third seasons. When the Westerosi saga has only entered its first season, the hype was nowhere near the levels it reached around season 3, particularly when the infamous Red Wedding episode caused a wave of reaction videos and online buzz.
Can The Rings of Power go the same route? Some people think yes; others, however, believe that the comparison to Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad doesn't hold any water.
"We already had a Lord of the Rings phenomenon, [I] don’t really see how that can happen twice," Redditor Pengroves noted.
To become its own thing, The Rings of Power may need something more than its already astronomical budget and a Middle-earth-themed slowburn against the backdrop of stunningly beautiful locations.
Whether or not the show manages to find its spark in upcoming season 2 and potential new chapters remains to be seen. There is no release date for the second season of The Rings of Power just yet.
