Ridley Scott's Sci-Fi Gem That Turned From Mainstream to Classics
This movie is just absolutely great, especially for those who enjoy the "hard" sci-fi subgenre.
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word "sci-fi"? The most common association is probably some space adventure in the distant future with aliens and space battles.
But in 2015, an absolutely majestic sci-fi movie came out that presented a more down-to-earth take on the subject, even though most of its running time takes place on another planet.
The Martian, directed by Ridley Scott and based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Andy Weir, is definitely one of the most realistic sci-fi movies in history, with only minor inaccuracies.
Set in the year 2035, it revolves around Dr. Mark Watney, portrayed by Matt Damon, a botanist and mechanical engineer who is part of the Ares III mission to Mars.
When the rest of the crew is prematurely evacuated due to a severe dust storm, Mark is left behind as his biomonitor is damaged and he is presumed dead.
The rest of the story follows his attempts to survive alone on the planet using his own knowledge and skills and trying to contact Earth to be rescued.
The movie does a great job of showing life on Mars as realistically as possible, although not without the aforementioned minor inaccuracies, with NASA even taking part in the production and advising the creators on various aspects.
But due to the running time some parts had to be cut, like a lot of scientific explanations, which doesn't damage the story too much.
With some very solid acting from Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels and the others, it keeps the viewer completely immersed in the events on screen.
The movie is also just fun and uplifting, which, along with a great soundtrack, just gives you a pleasant feeling after watching it that will stay with you for quite some time.
