Thanks to Dan Harmon we can finally find out the origin story of the weirdest Rick & Morty character.

Known for its complex storytelling and eccentric characters, Rick & Morty, the adult animated science fiction sitcom created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, has captured the hearts and minds of fans worldwide.

Among the show's many memorable characters is Mr. Poopybutthole, a seemingly innocent and joyful creature who has sparked intrigue and curiosity among viewers.

After several seasons of speculation, one of the show's co-writers has finally revealed a possible backstory for Mr. Poopybutthole.

Mr. Poopybutthole makes his debut in Total Rickall, the fourth episode of season 2, and immediately catches the viewers' attention.

With his yellow skin, top hat, and cane, he instantly stood out among the show's eclectic cast, and his cheerful demeanor and catchphrase "Ooh-wee!" quickly made him a fan favorite.

But Total Rickall never explains to fans the character's origin story. The episode revolves around a parasitic alien species that implants false memories into the minds of the Smith family and their friends.

These parasites manifest as a variety of crazy characters, including Mr. Poopybutthole, which makes Rick believe that his friend is also fake.

After shooting Mr. Poopybutthole, Rick discovers that he was wrong as the yellow-skinned creature turned out to be real. Fortunately, he survives the injury and appears in some of the next episodes.

Though the viewers are convinced that Mr. Poopybutthole was never a parasite, Dan Harmon shared another opinion in a 2017 interview with CinemaBlend.

He claimed that it could not be a coincidence that Mr. Poopybutthole first appeared in the episode along with alien parasites because his character is, in fact, the parasite but a different breed — more advanced and friendly.

Mr. Poopybutthole uses the gaps in the character's memory and crawls inside of those gaps. That's why he only appears in "concentrations of temporal malfunction or misperception and breakdown."

Following Harmon's statement Mr. Poopybutthole is the alien parasite who doesn't cause any harm to people but, in fact, amuses them.

It also explains why he is the only character along with Rick who can break the fourth wall and communicate with the viewers — such scenes try to kinda implement the gap in the minds of the people watching.

Sounds credible, don't you think?
