Reddit Picks a Controversial 90s Erotic Flick Wilder Than Basic Instinct
It questions the nature of the American Dream.
Back in 1992, Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone’s neo-noir shocked the whole world with its groundbreaking depiction of sexuality. Indeed, directed by Paul Verhoeven, Basic Instinct became a sensation that not only acquired a cult following, but also paved the way for other erotic movies of the 1990s.
However, 3 years after that, Verhoeven made a movie that wasn’t successful at all, as it sparked much more controversy and became a box office bomb, grossing just $37.8 million against a budget of $45 million. However, it’s even bolder than the 1992 thriller.
The film’s plot revolves around a young woman who has her own American dream: she wants to become a popular dancer. After taking up a job in a poor strip club, she encounters the high-profile Stardust Hotel’s showgirl and her bossy boyfriend.
Eventually, the protagonist ends up involved in the intrigues of those who strive towards more and more money and power, and the Stardust becomes a symbol of evil for her.
This synopsis makes the movie reminiscent of another flicks that show the dark side of the American dream, such as David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (2001) and Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan (2010). However, critics don’t share our optimism about it.
The film fell victim to the strict criticism regarding its excessive nudity, depiction of sexual violence and, apart from it, poorly written dialogues and unconvincing acting performances. It is reflected in its shameful 22% of critical acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes.
Nevertheless, the drama appears to be an extremely accurate satire on Western dreamy images of success and fame. It even mocks the sleazy nature of Hollywood filmmaking, in particular of the 90s, when it was hard to ascend to the top without making any significant sacrifices or being a nepo baby.
Titled Showgirls, now it can be considered a cultish movie that contains a serious satire worthy of praise. It’s a must–watch for those who enjoy wild movies of the 1990s.
“Showgirls is a phenomenal film, misread by most. It satirizes the American dream of working hard, getting opportunities, and succeeding by doing everything asked of you,” concludes Redditor @UnicornBestFriend
You can judge if this recognition is now reasonable by yourself, as the film is available for watching on Netflix and Prime.
