Sometimes the departure of the hero from the show is not played up very well by the writers. In such cases, fans offer their own options, and it happens that they turn out to be better than the official ones.

Grey's Anatomy is currently the longest-running and highest-rated medical drama in modern American TV history.

Not many characters remain from the original acting backbone: not so long ago the show said goodbye to Justin Chambers, who played the role of Dr. Alex Karev for fifteen years.

As you know, the easiest way to remove a character from a story is to kill them: dramatically and beautifully. But this time it wasn't the case.

In January 2020, the actor announced via social media that he was leaving the show. According to the official version, Chambers decided to leave the series because he wanted to move on.

It was impossible not to notice the change in the cast – one of the most popular characters disappeared from the show. The writers had to figure out how to properly complete his story.

And so was born one of the most fan-hated plot twists in Grey's Anatomy. No, he wasn't killed off like many of Grey's Anatomy's beloved characters.

Alex Karev left somewhere in Texas, where he decided to stay with a woman named Izzie Stevens, his ex-lover, who turned out to be pregnant.

The fans were most irritated by the fact that Alex did not even say goodbye to anyone – he just sent letters to his friends and colleagues explaining his decision to leave.

Most likely this happened because the actor refused to appear in the next episodes, so we have what we have. When the writers can't handle the departure of a character in a nice way, the fans step in.

As one of the most successful scenarios, fans see in the transfer of Alex to another hospital, so he could no longer appear in the series, but other characters would bring the audience news of his new job.

"I would have kept him at the other hospital and had Jo mention him from time to time like updates on his job and I'd let Jo and Alex have the only truly functional marriage," Reddit user smelltramo suggested.

Other fans accept the circumstances of Alex's departure, but agree that sending the letters was a terrible plot decision, and that the hero had to say goodbye to his colleagues in person.

"I get why he did it because those are his kids but I hated that he said goodbye with a letter like Izzie did. I wish he would have at least explained it to Jo face to face," Reddit user Original-Gear1583 commented.

The only thing the fans are happy about is that Alex was not just killed, as that would have made the plot even darker. You can follow the fate of Dr. Meredith Grey and her colleagues every Thursday on ABC.
