Real Reason Yellowstone’s Kevin Costner Won't Return? He Pissed Sheridan Off with This One Demand
Things were looking up for Yellowstone when Sheridan and Costner tried to negotiate the lead star’s return — but the creator of the show was infuriated with his ridiculous demand.
The Yellowstone drama has been going on for several months now, and things just kept getting worse by the day. What started as an internal conflict over the lead star’s schedule, quickly grew into a full-blown halt and a feud between Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner. The last season even had to be cut in two halves because of that!
Today, we already know that Costner, the actor behind the main character John Dutton, will not return to Yellowstone.
Over the past months, fans have had many speculations about the future of the series, but it seems like the grimmest option will come true: John Dutton will likely be killed off-screen for the show to move on without Costner.
But apparently, there was hope that even after their feud, Sheridan and Costner would mend fences and complete Yellowstone together. The creator and the lead star got on a call to discuss the terms of the latter’s return, and it almost went well…until Costner decided to throw an entire list of demands at Sheridan.
“On the call, Costner, while speaking in a friendly tone to Sheridan, unfurled his list of demands: increased money, reduced shooting schedule, and—here’s the kicker—the right to review, approve, and potentially veto every Sheridan script. That last part was a non-starter for Sheridan, who famously writes Yellowstone himself,” Matthew Belloni from Puck News reported.
According to the report, Kevin Costner was pretty infuriated after the creator of Yellowstone rejected him, and even decided to sue Paramount for litigation. While the actor was already paid for the entirety of Season 5 and only starred in the first half of it, we can only assume Costner was already promised big checks for S6-7.
So apparently, it was once again up to Kevin Costner to mend the fences and return to Yellowstone — but he tried pushing the boundaries and went too far. You’d think that after years of working with Taylor Sheridan, Costner has learned how much the creator of the show valued his creative independence…but he didn’t. Oh well.
