Unlike some of his colleagues, Leonardo Dicaprio doesn’t like watching his own movies, and it’s not because he’s shy: the actor has a very specific reason for it.

Do you know that weird feeling of watching yourself dance on a video from that party a week ago? How does it make you feel? While some embrace it and remember the fun they had, others feel extremely embarrassed and can’t help but notice the imperfection in their movements or think that they looked stupid doing that.

For actors and other performers, it’s pretty much the same thing.

There are stars like Tom Cruise who actually enjoy watching their own movies in the theater, and then there are actors like Brad Pitt who never watch their stuff because it makes them feel uncomfortable. But also, there are many categories of performers in between.

Leonardo Dicaprio, for one, is an outstanding performer with a straight-up sensational track record of movies, but he really hates watching his own films. That’s not because he feels embarrassed, however: the actor is pretty chill about viewing his older movies, and it’s only the recent ones that he never wants to touch.

His reason is simple — Dicaprio wants to be objective, and he needs time for that.

"It's interesting to make movies… It always takes me 10 years to reflect on whether a movie's good, bad, or terrible, because you're so immersed in the moment, you're sort of clouded by the experience you had, you never get that reflection,” the actor shared on BBC Radio 1.

When a decade passes, Leonardo Dicaprio is all-in on rewatching his film, but not before. He feels uncomfortable when others talk about how great or award-worthy his recent pictures are: the actor can’t make up his own mind about that.

“I can now look at movies I did 10 years ago with real judgment. So, whether people think something's award worthy, whether it gets good or bad reviews, it's all a crazy blur because you're so attached with the process of making this movie,” Dicaprio explained.

That’s quite a wise approach to craft and a great life advice from Leonardo Dicaprio: it’s all about not rushing in with a judgment and not allowing your emotions to cloud your mind.

Sometimes, it’s better to take some time before making a decision… But if you want to apply this advice in your everyday life, maybe don’t wait a decade each time.

Life’s too short as it is.
