Real Reason Why Daniel Radcliffe Refused to Reunite with Emma Watson in This Movie
Daniel Radcliffe had a chance to co-star with Emma Watson after the Harry Potter movies, but instead, he helped with the movie script, refused to participate, and left.
Sometimes, actors become great friends on the set of their joint movie, and such friendship can carry on throughout their entire lives. Careers might take both people in entirely different directions, but still, they’ll keep in touch — and typically, be happy to work on a new project together if an opportunity presents itself someday.
Even Harrison Ford, the legendary actor known for being picky, once immediately committed to starring in a Yellowstone spin-off without even reading the script after he learned that his co-star from decades ago would be there, too. Nostalgia and friendship are usually strong enough motivational factors for deals like that.
However, even though after having spent years on the set of Harry Potter together, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson ended up being close friends, Dan passed on such an opportunity. He had a chance to reunite with Watson for the 2013’s comedy This Is the End, but he ultimately decided against it and didn’t even give it a shot.
The question is, why?
The director of the movie, Evan Goldberg, revealed that Radcliffe really disliked the script — and it was Goldberg’s mistake for bringing a raw draft to the actor.
"Two years before we brought it to anybody else, we brought it to Daniel Radcliffe and he rejected it because it was sh*tty, it wasn't good enough. We got too excited, we jumped the gun on that. If we waited another year, I bet he would have done it," shared the director.
However, Radcliffe didn’t simply reject the offer: he took the time to carefully articulate what was wrong with the script. In the end, his feedback allowed the team to improve This Is the End quite dramatically.
“[Daniel] very respectfully explained that the material was not quite good enough, and he was right. It was a bad early version. He taught us a lesson. We learned something from him that day. [Later,] we just mixed things up. We made it a little too obvious at first," explained Goldberg.
Even though the fans didn’t get to witness Radcliffe and Watson’s grand reunion on the screen, it’s still cool to know that the Harry Potter lead actor participated in the project to some extent. Whenever you decide to watch or rewatch This Is the End, you can feel Daniel’s off-screen presence, gently and respectfully blasting the old script to oblivion.
