In case you expect a sugar-sweet story with weepy confessions and long stares, this is not it. Based on an eponymous manga by Aya Nakahara, Lovely Complex introduces us to Risa Koizumi, 172 cm tall, and Otani Atsushi, 156 cm.

Both are not exactly your average Japanese girl or guy respectively, and both struggle with it. They happen to also be friends, sarcastically nicknamed All Hanshin Kyojin because of their resemblance to a popular comedic duo with a similar height difference.

Risa and Otani both love the same music, have a very specific sense of humor and love languages (which would be gently bullying their loved ones). Still, they spend a long time denying a possibility of starting a relationship because of their height difference... until Risa becomes the first one to acknowledge that she wants to be more than friends.

Lovely Complex Is a Must-Watch Even If You Loathe Romcoms

What makes the anime series stand out among the other romantic comedies is the fact that it utilizes sarcasm and humor in a perfect way to make sure the love story is not too sweet.

Risa and Otani bicker in the most hilarious ways, so when Lovely Complex remembers that it's a romantic series, it's even relieving to finally see the two share a sweet moment.

What's more important, if you don't feel like falling into a void of yet another multi-season anime, Lovely Complex only has one season that consists of 24 episodes, each of which is no longer than half an hour.
