Percy Jackson E1 Has Already Dropped a Huge Reference (With a Lot of Heartbreak Potential)

After years of the Rick Riordan fandom waiting and praying for a decent adaptation, Percy Jackson and The Olympians is finally here with the first two episodes. And it seems that the new show isn't playing games: right from the start, the series apparently sets the stage for a good old emotional rollercoaster.

The premiere has seen the Percy Jackson TV show securing a nice and fresh 97% Rotten Tomatoes rating, and clearly, everyone loves it way more than the old Percy Jackson movies starring Logan Lerman and Alexandra Daddario.

However, it doesn't mean fans can feel safe and calm while watching the show. For instance, the very first episode has already dropped a single line that has the entire fandom screaming.

Nico Di Angelo Reference in Percy Jackson and the Olympians Episode 1

In the first episode, Percy's mother, Sally, casually mentions her favorite sandwich shop where she is heading for a takeout. Doesn't sound like a big deal, right? Well, the name of the place does.

Because "I'm gonna stop at D'Angelo's and pick up sandwiches in time for tipoff" was the exact phrase that Sally Jackson said.

Fans had a very hard time not taking this as a huge reference to Nico Di Angelo — a book character who appears first in the book Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse. He and his sister Bianca are the children of Hades, the god of death.

Book readers know just how tragic their story turns out to be; and now that the TV show appears to have officially referenced the notorious surname, fans are guessing whether it was just an homage or a tease of something big coming.

In the books, Bianca tragically dies even though Percy promised her brother Nico to protect her. Needless to say, it drives Nico crazy; that was the exact moment Riordan revealed that he was the son of Hades.

With the show seemingly following the books quite closely, it's now possible that the Percy Jackson fandom has every right to morally prepare themselves for the Di Angelo storyline — no matter the form it will be executed on TV.

New episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will arrive on Disney Plus every Wednesday through January 2024.
