One thing that period dramas are known for is the romance between the characters. The longing, the yearning, the hazy glances, and the heartfelt dialogue that usually ends with a kiss. What more do you need to be inspired to find that kind of love for yourself?

Unfortunately, it's not always the case that period films and TV series nail these scenes. Sometimes it's a lack of chemistry, sometimes it's poor writing, but too many stories with too much potential have been ruined at the last step.

5. Room with a View (1985)

At least with this movie, we can say for sure that the whole story, as well as the kiss, is meant to be hilariously awkward and bad. Daniel Day-Lewis is such a good actor that even with such a bad kiss, he pulls it off perfectly and makes the audience cringe every single time. The scene never gets old, no matter how many times you watch the movie.

4. Jane Eyre (1997)

Was that kiss intentionally awkward? That's the question many people want to know. Of course, it would make a lot of sense for Jane not to know how to kiss, since she has never experienced being that intimate with a man, but for the sake of the movie, this part would be much better with less realism involved.

3. Emma (1996)

This is very important: the bad kiss in question is Kate Beckinsale's, not Gwyneth Paltrow's. Since both actresses played Emma Woodhouse, it would be easy to confuse them, but while one acted perfectly, the other didn't pull off the kiss at all. Fortunately, this was the last such mistake in Beckinsale's acting career.

2. Downton Abbey ( 2010)

This scene is very controversial, as there are as many Downton fans who love it as there are who hate it. It's hard to deny the beauty of the cinematography and the visuals of the scene, but the kiss itself was hardly a kiss, as the lips of a couple did not even touch. Was it still an intimate moment? It certainly was, but it was not a kiss.

It's a shame that one of the best Jane Austen novels was made so dirty. The kiss was way too awkward and the acting was too on the nose to notice anything else. All lovers of period drama prefer the 1995 adaptation to the newer one, simply because it does justice to the original story and doesn't laugh at its legacy.
