We can't say it wasn't somewhat predictable, though.

As Homelander slowly becomes more and more of a menace with each passing season, it becomes increasingly difficult for The Boys ' showrunners to come up with someone who can still be a truly intimidating threat for him.

In season 3, the focus somewhat shifted to Soldier Boy, Homelander's newfound father, but even he won't be enough to keep up the good old level of suspense.

Is there a way out? There certainly is, but none of us are going to like it. According to Redditors, The Boys is inevitably heading into Billy Butcher's villain era.

Think about it: the guy spent the entire season 3 relying heavily on Temp V, clearly moving away from his old "normal guys vs. those superpowered freaks" principles.

If anything, Butcher is now a superpowered freak himself, or at least he is on the way to become one.

One fan even came up with a series finale prediction, as predictable as it is painful.

"It's obvious that Butcher will get permanent V and my personal prediction is that he will be the main villain at the end of the series. Butcher with perm V will kill Homelander, after that Ryan and Hughie have to kill Butcher and that will be season 5, the last season," Redditor SMaxTH said.

However, there is still hope that showrunner Eric Kripke still has plenty of surprises up his sleeve. After all, The Boys has been anything but predictable this entire time.

Even if Butcher does become a villain, we can certainly have another season of him walking a fine line between the good old days and the dark side.

The Boys season 4 finished filming earlier in April, but the release date remains to be announced.
