Out of All the Things That Don't Make Sense on TVD, This is the Most Ridiculous

However, despite its huge success, there are some aspects of the series that fans find hard to understand. Like that plot point when Stefan Salvatore couldn't save both Matt Donovan and Elena Gilbert.

For those who don't remember, in the season 3 finale, Elena and Matt's car careens off a bridge and plunges into the water below.

Stefan, being the hero that he is, rushes to their aid. However, when he gets there, Elena insists that he saves Matt first, leaving her to drown.

Given that Stefan is a vampire who possesses supernatural strength and speed, it's reasonable to assume that he could've easily saved both Matt and Elena simultaneously, with one in each hand.

And what bothers the viewers is that the show failed to adequately demonstrate the strength and power of vampires, portraying some of them as weak and others as strong whenever it's more convenient for the idea they want to push through.

But as it turns out, fans weren't the only ones confused by this storyline. In fact, Paul Wesley, the actor who portrayed Stefan in the series, revealed to Digital Spy that he was concerned when he first read that scene.

"And then we rehearsed and it was like the day of shooting and I went, 'Wait a minute, wait a minute, the way this is blocked, the way they were doing this, I could very easily just grab Elena and bring her up to the surface – I'm a vampire. And so I called the writers and I said 'This is, guys, this doesn't make any sense,'" he disclosed.

According to the star, the writers provided two justifications for their decision. Firstly, they claimed that it was physically impossible for him to grab more than one person at a time.

Secondly, they pointed out that Elena had been striving to assert her independence, and that Wesley's character had to respect her as a woman and let her make her own choices.

"I don't buy it, okay, I'll be completely honest. […] I, personally, think Stefan would've just went, 'I don't really care what the hell you have to say,' and would've grabbed her, so, but it is a story, you know, and frustrating things happen in life and in stories," Wesley explained.

Despite the writers' attempts to justify this decision, fans also remain unconvinced. For many, this twist goes against the fundamental lore and takes away from what makes vampires so fascinating in the first place.

While it's understandable that the writers may have wanted to use this as a way to advance the plot in the direction they wanted, the execution could've been better.

Stefan allowing Elena to die in this situation doesn't hold up as it wasn't about respecting someone's decision, it was about saving the life of a person you love, and we all know Stefan would've done anything for Elena.
