One Time Andrew Garfield Wanted To Explore Spider-Man's Sexuality And Had A Perfect Partner In Mind

With all the backlash Marvel Studios faced a few years ago when the news broke that they were going to change MJ's comic book appearance, it's hard to imagine that the change could have come much sooner and been much more radical.

While many fanboys turned their backs on the MCU production, calling it a wake-up call for casting Zendaya in the role, they praised other versions of Spider-Men.

Little did they know that Andrew Garfield, who portrayed Peter Parker in Sony's 2012 production of The Amazing Spider-Man, had his own thoughts on MJ.

As he admitted to EW at Comic-Con in 2013, he had an entire conversation with the film's producer, Matt Tolmach, about the possibility of Spider-Men exploring his sexuality and being in a gay relationship in a joking, but not too joking way.

“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ. And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking!… So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?” the actor said.

What's even more interesting is that Andrew Garfield already had the perfect co-star in mind.

In the actor's eyes, MJ could have easily stood for Michael B. Jordan, who absolutely blew him away with his performance in The Wire. The possibility of portraying interracial bisexuality on the screen excited the actor even more.

Garfield seemed so proud and excited about his idea that he quickly shared it not only with the producer but also with the film's director, Marc Webb.

Unfortunately, neither of them ever went forward with what seems to be the most risky interpretation of Spider-Man ever imagined.

Now, 10 years later, it seems like a missed opportunity.

Luckily, what we did get from The Amazing Spider-Man is a beautiful performance from Andrew Garfield alongside Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy.
