It’s been more than 25 years, but the actress still feels like she could’ve done things differently.

When Titanic was first released on big screens, it was an incredible success that opened many doors for the lead actors. Both Leonardo DiCaprio, who played Jack in the movie, and Kate Winslet, who played Rose, were not exactly new to the industry at the point of Titanic, but it secured their success and ensured following career opportunities.

With huge success, however, came a huge backlash. For many years following the premiere, Kate Winslet found herself under fire for being “too fat” and not able to fit on one door alongside DiCaprio’s character Jack.

Although the argument was ridiculous, and the actress’ weight would not influence James Cameron ’s creative vision for the movie finale, the hate got to the actress and hurt her to the point of feeling insecure in her own body.

What’s even worse, not only the viewers started to bash the actress with hate, but the media gladly joined. What should’ve been a celebration of her talent, turned out to be a body-shaming spree.

Winslet opened up about her terrible experience only 25 years later, on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz. While discussing the scene actress confessed that she herself does not believe in the possibility of both Jack and Rose surviving on the door.

And even if it was possible, that just wasn’t the way the film was supposed to end. The actress continued to admit that she would treat the situation very differently today:

“I would have absolutely said to journalists, I would have responded, I would have said, 'Don’t you dare treat me like this. I'm a young woman, my body is changing, I'm figuring it out, I'm deeply insecure, I'm terrified, don't make this any harder than it already is.' That’s bullying, you know, and actually borderline abusive, I would say”.

Unfortunately, there is no way to turn time back and give the haters a proper snap back, however, Winslet does her best to advocate for young women in Hollywood today, making sure no one else is subject to such horrible treatment.
