Sometimes the humor is so dark, you’ll need a flashlight.

Showing a character being relentlessly bullied by somebody they trust enough to call friends is one trope that is still being used all over the sitcom genre, and makes the viewers extremely uncomfortable at times.

The Big Bang Theory ’s Chuck Lorre isn’t a stranger to that storytelling tool either, but, usually, it wasn’t Sheldon who got the short end of the stick.

At some point all the viewers were almost immune to Penny taking it on Leonard, Howard on Raj, and Bernadette… well, pretty much on everybody at a walking distance.

However, the most socially awkward one from the group somehow managed to stay aside all that, occasionally just throwing in more unacceptable one-liners.

While the fandom was getting full of people done with Sheldon’s annoying behavior that everybody looked past, the writers planned the revenge plot, which spread across several months. Although it was revealed only in the first episode of season 3, viewers could only imagine the impact the story actually had.

For someone so passionate about science and their own scientific achievements, the worst thing you could possibly do to Sheldon is to publicly disgrace them in the eyes of a community.

And that’s exactly what his so-called friends did, forcing him to believe the false data, publish and present his theory, to then just retract it later.

A punishment that was a little too extreme even for Sheldon, many fans believe.

Do you think this study prank was taken too far?

The jokes and pranks practically never stopped throughout the whole 12-season run of the show, however, neither came even close in scale and the amount of planning.

Considering the truthful passion Sheldon had for this research, and the amount of work he had to put into it just to find out it was all for nothing, that was one of the most heartbreaking moments.

If you want to freshen up your memory of the beginning of the third season of The Big Bang Theory and be the judge of that prank for yourself, you can go ahead and stream the iconic sitcom on Netflix or MAX.
