One TBBT Star Who Joined Cast Just For Health Insurance But Stayed For Years
Practicality can truly do wonders to one's career.
Nothing is more important than family. You know this if you have children and you have to provide for them every day, not only with food and clothing, but also with professional care.
Good health insurance can be a deciding factor for many people in accepting a job, and actors are no different than any other ordinary U.S. citizen.
But sometimes, while trying to get the best deal for your family, you find life-changing opportunities. That was the case for Mayim Bialik, who auditioned for The Big Bang Theory with the help of the Screen Actors Guild.
It's hard to imagine the show today with a different Amy Fowler, or without Amy at all.
The actress performed so brilliantly that the writers had to extend her role from one episode to many more before she was offered a recurring role. But it was all just a happy coincidence.
"It is true that after I got my doctorate I had an infant and a toddler and I was running out of health insurance. I had been teaching neuroscience for about five years after getting my degree, and I figured if I could just get a job here or there I would be able to get health insurance," Bialik admitted in an episode of PeopleTV's Couch Surfing.
The actress had never planned for acting to be her main career: she had no intention of becoming a regular on a TV show or continuing to audition.
She had previously completed her doctorate and was very happy with her teaching job. In fact, acting was a career of choice only because it didn't have to be full-time.
But it was fate's call, and now Bialik has no regrets about how her life turned out.
If you're feeling nostalgic and want to revisit your favorite episodes of The Big Bang Theory, all seasons of the iconic sitcom are available to stream on Max or Netflix.
