One Penny Scene TBBT Showrunners Wish They Could Undo
Although Penny became the soul of the show over time, her character was not initially a favorite of the show's creators.
The history of television is full of truly iconic characters. These guys no longer exist exclusively in the universe of their own show, but have become part of popular culture.
The Big Bang Theory has become a prime example of how lines or jokes from a show become classics among sitcom fans.
No Comic-Con is complete without Bazinga! or Sheldon's trademark "There, there" to comfort his friends.
That's another beauty of The Big Bang Theory – it defined its cult status by establishing itself in pop culture with a series of unique quotes and ever-living gags outside of the show.
However, one of Penny's famous jokes has become a subject of regret for the show's creators, who have admitted that it did not help the character's development in the best way.
Showrunner Chuck Lorre admitted that when the series began, Penny was not quite what he wanted her to be. She was too frivolous and shallow, and the joke said by her in the very first episode only reinforced that image.
According to co-showrunner Steve Molaro, the joke is that although Penny is a vegetarian, she loves to eat steak:
"She was the ditzy blonde girl in the pilot, which is one of the things that is not great about [it]. […] I didn't write the pilot, but those are moments [that] you wish you could undo a little bit of."
Now that the sitcom has been off the air for a few years, it can be said that Penny has become the heart of the show and one of its most popular characters.
Kaley Cuoco herself, who played Penny, admitted that in her opinion the most awkward scenes in the sitcom were the bed scenes with Leonard, played by her ex-boyfriend Johnny Galecki.
Kaley and Johnny dated for about two years and broke up just as a romantic relationship began between their characters.
The actress admitted that when they discussed these scenes with Johnny, they came to the conclusion that Chuck Lorre specifically wrote episodes with a lot of intimate scenes to make fun of them.
