One of the Best Big Bang Theory Moments Was Totally an Accident
Sometimes no script can replace a hilarious accidental situation.
Summary
- While the script of The Big Bang Theory is undeniably funny, many of the hilarious moments came from pure improvisation.
- However, the funniest moments are the ones that even the actors themselves did not see coming at the time of filming.
- For example, what is generally considered one of the funniest moments of the show turned out to be a complete accident.
The Big Bang Theory is a show with some of the highest quality humor on television (at least for the first few seasons), and that's largely thanks to Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and the writing staff who gave us such hilarious scripts.
But TBBT wouldn't be so vibrant and memorable if it weren't for its actors, who brought the characters to life, gave them many unique individual traits, and actively participated in the writing itself.
A huge benefit of the iconic sitcom was the dynamic between the cast of the Pasadena gang. For so many years of the show's existence, the cast and crew had become very close, and therefore, judging from the available behind-the-scenes footage and bloopers, the filming was always organic, and the actors were not afraid to bring something of themselves to what was happening in front of the camera lenses.
As a result, many moments in the show were not scripted but improvised. This is especially true of one of the funniest moments in the show's history, because no scriptwriter could have come up with it.
The Show Was Built on Improvisation and Unscripted Moments More Than You Might Think
As we have said before, over the course of 279 episodes, or nearly 12 years, the actors of The Big Bang Theory became so attached to each other and to the project itself that it was no longer seen as just another job. On the contrary, each member of the cast enjoyed the process immensely, as was evident from their words in the wake of the news that Sheldon Jim Parsons was leaving the project and with it, the end of TBBT.
'Yeah, you know I often say for me, personally, ending Big Bang was like breaking up with the love of your life when you know nothing is wrong but it's just time. That's really what it felt like you know. I'm still processing what that entire journey was like. 279 episodes you know, I grew up on that show,' Kunal Nayyar said at the time.
The actors' sincere investment in the script was shown, for example, by the fact that none of the actors could hold back tears during the final table reading. This was true not only of the sad moments — many of the giggles and laughs caught on camera were pure coincidence, which only added to the liveliness of the event. But even when the characters were standing there with straight faces, such accidents became even more hilarious.
Fans Erupted in Laughter at This Unscripted Sheldon Moment
One of the funniest moments, according to fans, was a brief but incredibly memorable scene from Season 4's The Boyfriend Complex involving the long-suffering roommate arrangement that Sheldon had so meticulously prepared. The plot involved Leonard and Penny pretending to get back together after a painful breakup so that Penny could make a good impression on her visiting father.
Just when it looked like they really were getting back together, Sheldon stayed up all night updating the Penny-specific sections of the roommate agreement. When Leonard got home, however, he immediately shocked a sleep-deprived Cooper by telling him they had broken up. Unable to take it, Sheldon immediately threw the prepared papers in the air.
And then came the funniest part, according to fans: one of the papers landed perfectly on Sheldon's shoulder in an upright position, while Jim Parsons did everything he could to show his frustration and not laugh. Special kudos to Johnny Galecki, who also adapted to the hilarious randomness and didn't let out a laugh. It all added so much chaos and dynamism to what was going on that this completely random moment was undoubtedly one of the funniest in the show's history.
