Get Out, which breathed new life into horror and instantly made Jordan Peele a genre icon, will be pulled from Netflix in January 2024.

Summary:

  • January 2024 will bring changes to the list of projects available on Netflix
  • Unfortunately, 2017's horror masterpiece Get Out is among the films being pulled from the streaming service
  • Considering the movie's iconic status and many accolades, this might be the perfect opportunity to finally check it out or refresh your memory

As the new year approaches day by day, so does a new update to the list of projects available on Netflix, with a whole bunch of new ones coming to the platform in January 2024.

But that also means that a good number of other projects will no longer be available on the streaming service, and among them is not only one of the best horror films to come out in recent years, but possibly one of the greatest films of the 21st century, judging by its many accolades.

Get Out Was One Of The Best Additions To The Horror Genre In Decades

While many fans may know Jordan Peele from his acting and comedic performances, not too long ago he began trying his hand at directing, which resulted in great success.

It turns out that despite the fact that it was comedy that made him famous in the first place, Peele also has a special talent for directing horror films, with 2019's Us and 2022's Nope offering new and fresh takes on the genre, much to the acclaim of both critics and audiences.

However, many fans of the director's work believe that he has never really managed to top his own stellar directorial debut, which came in 2017 with the release of Get Out.

The film centers on Chris Washington, portrayed by Daniel Kaluuya, who is nervous about meeting the family of his girlfriend, Rose Armitage, played by Allison Williams, due to the interracial nature of their relationship.

But contrary to Chris' fears, the Armitages are actually incredibly friendly, perhaps to the point of being overly so, and take an unusual interest in their guest.

Without giving too much away, the story becomes increasingly convoluted from that point on, until a bizarre twist (which actually makes perfect sense) turns everything upside down for both the viewer and the protagonist.

The Film Was An Instant Success With Both Critics And Audiences

Combining an intriguing plot, well-acted characters (who also make incredibly smart decisions throughout the film, avoiding the tired clichés of the genre), and great social commentary that doesn't feel forced in the slightest and is cleverly integrated into the story, Get Out became an instant hit.

The film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and won in the Best Original Screenplay category at the 90th Academy Awards, and won in the Best Original Screenplay and Best Sci-Fi/Horror Film categories at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards.

It was also nominated in the Best Motion Picture and Best Actor categories at the Golden Globe Awards, along with a myriad of lesser ones from various associations, websites and magazines.

Audiences loved it too, making Get Out a massive box office success, earning an astounding $255.4 million against a modest budget of only $4.5 million, making it hard to believe that it was the director's first work.

As mentioned above, Jordan Peele went on to solidify his name as an amazing horror filmmaker with his next works, but Get Out still holds a special place in the hearts of many fans who consider it to be his greatest achievement.
