No mother would actually do that to her child.

If there's one thing that pretty much every viewer of The Vampire Diaries would agree on, it's that Damon Salvatore is a jerk who shouldn't get a happy ending compared to all the other characters. The list of his crimes is so long and so obvious that people are still genuinely surprised at how he managed to gather so many followers.

But what surprises the audience even more is how easy it is for the characters around Damon to sweep everything under the rug, to forgive and befriend him, especially after what he did to Caroline.

Both Elena and Bonnie are equally guilty of condoning and letting Damon's past behavior slide. While Elena had a whole romance arc with him without feeling guilty or fearing for her own safety, Bonnie managed to become his best friend. While this is clearly a very lousy excuse the show's writers made to move the storyline along, it clearly crosses all lines.

The only thing worse than Elena and Bonnie's lack of reaction to what Damon did was the same lack of reaction from Liz Forbes, Caroline's own mother.

Although many people in the fandom consider her to be the best parent of all, she was actually a mother who was able to look past her daughter's rape and assault and continue to be friendly with Damon as if it had never happened. The one person who would have made perfect sense to stand up for her and protect her to the end didn't seem to care.

One could argue that Liz simply didn't know about what happened between Caroline and Damon, but that would make her very inattentive. Knowing that they dated, finding out that Damon is a vampire, and then picking up on all the hatred her daughter had for him, any mother would be able to put two and two together if the writers wanted her to.

But they didn't, so neither did she.

Do you think Liz should’ve known what Damon did to Caroline?

If you don't remember this storyline to be as frustrating or want to refresh your memory on any other season or episode of The Vampire Diaries, you can stream the show on Netflix, MAX, or Peacock TV.
