Shondaland, take a lesson.

With so many period dramas on television today, it's not hard to notice some major similarities in how the characters dress, what their aspirations are, or what they do.

Since most TV shows focus on the lives of the aristocracy and don't cover the lower classes, their affairs are mostly limited to social events.

From balls to races, it feels like Bridgerton has already covered everything the aristocracy could do in 1800s Mayfair. Each season, however, the writers come up with more options, some of which feel a little more familiar than others.

Sanditon Hot Air Balloon Episode

If you have seen many comparisons between the Netflix hit and the period drama from PBS, there is now another reason to add to the list. In season 3 of Bridgerton, the Ton is invaded to see the new technological invention, the hot air balloon. The scene doesn't go as planned, and Colin Bridgerton steps in to save the day.

Although the scene was meant to be tense, and Colin's actions were purely heroic, many fans of the show weren't impressed with the way it was shot and edited. It felt too long, Penelope had too much time to get out of the balloon's path, and overall the threat of the hot balloon seemed too far-fetched.

Since the scene wasn't even in Julia Quinn's corresponding novel, Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, fans didn't like it and didn't pay too much attention to it. Those fans who watched Sanditon, however, quickly connected the dots between the shows and were reminded of the hot air balloon scene from season 2 of their favorite show.

The catch is that both groups of fans can enjoy the fact that whatever Bridgerton got his inspiration from, he failed to deliver the same quality. Discussing the entire season and this scene in particular, members of the r/Kanthony subreddit agreed on the wacky angles and poor post-production choices.

“The balloon editing is horrific and Sanditon did it way better. I assumed the angles were to accommodate Nic's height but this could be done better,” Redditor Straight-Health-8393 said.

While Sanditon viewers aren't the biggest fans of the balloon scene themselves, they agree that it's a win-win. If you want to see if there will be more similarities between two Regency-set TV shows in season 3, be sure to tune in for part 2 on June 13 on Netflix.
