One Iconic '00s Comedy is Never Going to Get a Sequel, and Maybe It's a Good Thing
Amanda Seyfried, who starred alongside Lindsey Lohan and Rachel McAdams in Mean Girls, has said that we probably shouldn't wait for the movie's sequel. Wait a minute. Isn't there already one?
Technically, there is, but in the form of a TV movie that premiered on ABC Family in 2011, only to become a mess and a flop.
Some fans of the original film and cast have since called for a proper sequel that would reunite the actors and becomes an instant hit.
Amanda Seyfried sat down with her Mean Girls co-star Lindsay Lohan as an interviewer for Interview magazine, where they discussed a lot of things about personal life and movies.
Seyfried said she would "kill to do one week, all of us playing our own roles on Mean Girls on Broadway" and asked Lohan if Mean Girls 2 would ever happen. Lohan argued that it would be fun, but talking about Mean Girls being a musical, she said "they can't do it" because it wouldn't be "the same tone". And Seyfried agreed, saying it would be "completely different."
SEYFRIED: I would kill just to do one week, all of us playing our own roles on Mean Girls on Broadway.
LOHAN: That would be really fun.
SEYFRIED: Because a Mean Girls 2 is never going to happen, is it?
Earlier this year, the actress expressed her desire to return for a sequel.
"It would be really nice to go back there. Because we wouldn't be going backwards, we'd be going forward as where we all are in our lives right now," she told Access Hollywood.
Paramount has been rumored to be working on a movie musical, and previously Lacey Chabert, who was a member of the original cast, said that she would "absolutely" be happy to reprise her role in a sequel, should one be made.
Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she said "I think it would be so much fun to see where these women are now and if their kids are the new mean girls. I would love to know what they're doing. Let's do it."
Mean Girls has become one of the iconic movies of the 2000s thanks to hilarious scenes, a great script by Tina Fey, and one-liners we all use in our everyday lives. And while the cast dreams of reuniting for a sequel, not all fans are sure there should be one. Some believe the movie should be left alone because it was good enough on its own and came to its own conclusion.
One of the redditors in the "Let's-Do-Mean-Girls-2" camp has even come up with a plot for the movie that would follow the daughters of the five original characters as they go shopping for prom dresses.
"This is the first time the original Mean Girls moms have seen each other since high school. All the past issues come up and the moms start reliving their childhoods through their daughters," jazinthepiper suggested.
Eventually, they would understand that their daughters' stories are not really their own and they should move on with their lives. Sounds like a nice enough idea for emotional closure, doesn't it?
