Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is a masterpiece, but this scene is on a whole different level of awesome.

Gerwig’s fantasy comedy movie, based on the famous Barbie doll created by Mattel, has been dominating the global box office since its release, proving Barbie’s continued relevance so many years after its initial conception. While Barbie may seem to be reigning supreme now, it wasn’t always that way – in 2001, a worthy competitor arrived on the scene.

The Bratz dolls, created by a former Mattel employee for MGA Entertainment, have not been around nearly as long as Barbie, but they have been giving Mattel’s creations a run for their money since the beginning of the 21st century.

The Barbie movie features its fair share of meta moments and inside jokes, and it could not have missed out on a nod to the doll’s main competitor, Bratz, either. An eagle-eyed Instagram user has spotted a reference to the Bratz dolls in Gerwig’s Barbie.

Remember the scene with the four high school girls who are not Barbie fans at all? They actually represent the four original Bratz dolls: Sasha, Yasmin, Chloe, and Jade. The girls in the movie have the same names as the dolls, and they even kind of look like them (and don’t even get us started on their sassy attitude)!

The references don’t stop there. At one point, Sasha’s mom, played by America Ferrera, endearingly calls her daughter Bunny Boo, which is Sasha’s real-life name for her pet rabbit in the Bratz universe. Isn’t that sweet?

MGA Entertainment and Mattel may be feuding hard in the real world, but it is still nice to see Barbie paying homage to its primary rival in such a subtle, yet fitting, way. Maybe the two companies will finally patch things up in the future? Here is hoping!

Barbie, starring Margot Robbie, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, and Alexandra Shipp, is playing in theaters now.
