He worked hard enough and it's time to let go.

Throughout the 19 seasons that Grey's Anatomy has been on the air, fans have seen many characters come and go in various ways, usually more tragic than not.

Character deaths and abrupt departures, while traumatizing and sad, have become a running joke within the fandom, with many guessing who's going to go next.

There are always plenty of possibilities, as almost every character has their own haters, but one stands out the most.

Richard Webber, portrayed by James Pickens Jr, was introduced at the very beginning of the show as the Chief of Surgery and has been one of the recurring characters ever since.

He struggled a lot with his relationships, his job, and his addictions that affected all of the above, but somehow always managed to come out of bad situations with almost no real damage.

After almost 20 years of growth and development, crazy storylines, romances and mentorships, it looks like fans are ready to say goodbye to Webber.

However, the ending wouldn't have to be bad: many feel that Richard Webber truly deserves the retirement he's been contemplating since the show's first season.

Fans are bothered by the fact that the character who was once rugged, career-oriented, and ambitious, just like you'd want the Chief of Surgery to be, now has none of those qualities.

It also seems real: no one can keep up the same pace forever, especially after everything Richard has been through. But that does not mean that he needs to hold the seat just for the sake of it.

Many agree that they would rather see someone else get a chance to shine than watch someone who once had a decent character slowly disintegrate and become nothing more than a grumpy grandpa.

It would also be a breath of fresh air for the show as it tries to reboot and focus on a new group of incoming interns.

We'll have to wait and see if Richard will be able to keep his place for much longer. For now, you can tune into season 19 of Grey's Anatomy every Thursday on ABC.
