One Gilmore Girls Storyline So Painfully Nonsensical, It's Hard To Rewatch
The best shows are capable of the all-time worst stories.
Summary:
- Gilmore Girls was The CW TV show, focused on the lives of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, a single mother and her teenage daughter.
- Lorelai is portrayed to appear childish and unserious, which leads to one of the worst plots in her journey.
- In season 5, episode 21, Lorelai has a pregnancy scare, and this is one of the most genuinely hated plots in the show.
Just like any other family comedy, Gilmore Girls was never expected to be realistic. Although the story of Lorelai's teenage pregnancy and estranged relationship with her parents hit close to home for many people, the show did a great job of mixing moments of fun with moments of drama.
The contrast between the responsible and serious teenager Rory and her childish and impulsive mother Lorelai provided the basis for the comedy, but also kept the show in perfect balance. However, it wasn't always possible to contain the madness that Lorelai brought into her own life and the lives of others.
One particular episode from season 5 remains the most chaotic, nonsensical, and downright cringe-worthy episode of the entire series.
Lorelai Gilmore Pregnancy Scare
Many would say that doing a pregnancy scare episode on a show like this is a good idea. Considering the show's audience, it could be a perfect opportunity to show the real-life consequences of not using protection and teach young viewers a valuable lesson. Gilmore Girls did just that, but in a way that was completely inappropriate.
After an unprotected intimate encounter with Luke, Lorelai feels she might be pregnant. She judges her own condition on the third day after intercourse by only one symptom: she craves an apple. According to her, this has only happened once before, when she was pregnant with Rory.
This symptom alone is convincing enough for a woman in her 30s to panic. That one little craving ended up being a reason for many people around her, including her own daughter, her best friend, and a bunch of actual medical professionals, to spin around her. Was that the lesson to take the subject seriously? Hard to say.
Many fans feel that the episode was really just meant to be a filler. And not very well thought out. In previous seasons, Lorelai had already been seen snacking on apples without a problem, so it was clearly just a lazy excuse to create some sort of buzz around the character.
Overall, fans consider this episode to be one of the worst in the entire series. For both reasons, how badly the topic of pregnancy scares was actually handled, and how lazily the storyline was intertwined with the larger plot.
If you are lucky enough to not remember the episode well, but want to indulge in some cringe-worthy content, you can go ahead and stream Gilmore Girls season 5 episode 21 on Netflix.
