There's just so much cruelty that can be forgiven.

There is no doubt that an event like the Hunger Games would shake the mental health of anyone, let alone teenagers.

However, because of Katniss' heroic nature and strong mentality, both book readers and moviegoers sometimes tend to forget just how horrific and dystopian the reality of such a world would be.

Not everyone reacts to trauma in the same way, and PTSD comes in many different forms, all of which are valid. But sometimes it makes it so much harder to empathize with otherwise amazing characters.

This is exactly the case with Johanna Mason, a character the fandom still can't seem to make up its mind about.

From her introduction to the end of the story, Johanna remains one of the most badass characters out there.

She is cool, she is independent, she is confident, and she attracts almost every Hunger Games fan with these qualities. However, not everyone is able to handle the toughness of her nature.

Especially after she admits that she likes the idea of continuing the violence.

It doesn't take a genius to understand her motives: Joanna has suffered a lot, lost her whole family, and now she wants revenge. What's even scarier is that she doesn't care who pays the price for her pain and the pain of many other families.

Just as the Capitol wanted to subject children to the Hunger Games, she's willing to continue the cycle and do the same to her children. Starting, of course, with Snow's grandchild.

While some Hunger Games fans enjoy the complexity and duality of the character, others believe this is the perfect example of someone blinded by revenge.

Both sides are probably correct in some of their feelings, but the true intentions of Johanna Mason may forever remain unknown.

If you're interested in revisiting the Hunger Games franchise and forming your own opinion, you can stream the movies on Netflix, HBO Max, and Peacock Premium.
