One Character Netflix's Sandman Did Dirty, According to Neil Gaiman

Netflix 's Sandman TV series, based on Neil Gaiman 's comic book of the same name, has been praised for its faithfulness to the source material.

The show climbed to the top of Netflix's global most-watched list just three days after its release, and received a warm reception from critics and audiences, scoring 87 and 80% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, one particular character was a far cry from the original, according to the comic book author.

One of Dream's supernatural relatives, Despair, portrayed by Donna Preston, appears in the series as a depressed and unhappy woman, unloved by her family.

Despite what you might think, since she is literally called Despair, her character in the comics is much more complex than that.

The first of the Endless to die and be reborn, her second incarnation looks a lot like the one we saw in the series, but in the comics she appears completely naked.

Moreover, she is much more than the depressed girl from the TV series, possessing a cold, calculating demeanor and great intelligence.

It is unclear whether she is just a bystander observing the suffering of humanity, or a skilled manipulator secretly orchestrating it.

Despair is also one of the most patient of the Endless, especially compared to her twin, Desire.

Although her appearance in the first season of the Netflix series was limited, Neil Gaiman, who helped create the adaptation, admitted that he and other creators had missed what they were going for with this version of the character.

So it is safe to assume that the second season, which has already been confirmed, will correct the mistakes and bring Despair closer to her complex original.

Donna Preston will also appear in the second season of Good Omens, another of Gaiman's TV projects, where she will portray Mrs. Sandwich, who will be quite different from her Sandman character.

A release date for The Sandman season 2 has not yet been announced.
