Obi-Wan Kenobi Director Doesn’t Rule Out a Sequel, Despite Season 1 Flops
Deborah Chow reflected on her work on the Star Wars TV series and teased the possibility that it might be renewed for season 2.
The long-awaited Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series wrapped over a year ago, but while critics gave the show a pretty warm reception, many fans weren't so kind, saying it didn't live up to their expectations.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the show's director, Deborah Chow, reflected on what was the most challenging part of making the series, what made the biggest impression on her, and whether it will get more seasons in the future.
According to Chow, the hardest part was inserting the story between the prequels and the original trilogy with such important characters of the franchise because "everybody knows what happened to them before and after."
Speaking of iconic characters, getting to direct Darth Vader himself was the most impressive aspect of the series for her.
It was a huge responsibility to make him look on par with the Sith Lord's other big screen appearances, but it was absolutely amazing.
As for the possibility of the show being renewed for a second season, Deborah revealed that Ewan McGregor, who starred as the titular Jedi, started coming up with ideas as soon as they finished filming.
Although it remains unclear for now, she believes there are a lot of stories to be told as there are still 10 years until Episode IV, so "never say never."
Fans are rather sour about the director's revelation, as they believe she actually failed the aforementioned biggest challenge of making the story feel organic.
They say that the series has only created countless plot holes, with the biggest being Luke's unexplained amnesia, as in Episode IV he is completely unaware of Jedi and Sith, despite being nearly killed by an Inquisitor in the series, only to be saved by Obi-Wan.
The only possible explanation is that he has blocked out those memories, which is incredibly forced, so most likely the creators just didn't give this aspect enough thought.
At this point, they don't even seem to want the second season of Kenobi, since the wound is still fresh and they think that maybe Chow wasn't the best person for the job.
