Now That Grey's Anatomy Showrunner's Out, Fans Are Ready to Give It Another Chance
According to Grey's Anatomy fans, Krista Vernoff's departure may be the best news for the show ever.
After six years at the helm of Grey's Anatomy and four years at the helm of its spinoff, Station 19, Krista Vernoff is stepping down as the show's showrunner and executive producer.
"It has been the privilege of a lifetime to be entrusted to run Grey's Anatomy for the past six years and Station 19 for the last four," Vernoff told Deadline in a statement. "The passion of the dedicated fandoms and the impact these shows have on hearts and minds cannot be overstated. The amount of talent in these two extraordinary casts and these two brilliant writers rooms is beyond measure — and these crews work magic week after week."
According to Deadline, Vernoff could make way for Grey's Anatomy veteran Meg Marinis, who started as a researcher and rose to executive producer, to become showrunner.
Fans seem to be celebrating Vernoff's departure, and even those who vowed not to watch Grey's Anatomy after Ellen Pompeo's departure are thinking about giving the show another chance.
Among the many issues fans had with Vernoff's creative direction for the show, it was the awkward relationship between Maggie and Jackson that irked the fandom the most. According to many people, the two made things weirdly incest-like, even though they were not related by blood and did not grow up together.
However, many also believe that the "damage" to Grey's has already been done and that Vernoff's departure as showrunner came too late. While some fans are holding out hope that Grey's Anatomy will cross the 30-season threshold, others are far less optimistic.
"I mean It's great, but almost too late. Season 20 will probably be the last season, so I don't picture any cast shake up. I don't see any character getting written out now, unless the actor were to leave the show," Redditor Oncer93 said.
ABC's Grey's Anatomy is currently in its 19th season, while its spinoff, Station 19, is in its sixth.
