The best historical TV series released or being released in 2023.

Speaking of historical dramas, perhaps one of the most prominent in the last decade was Downton Abbey, a series about the decline of the old British aristocracy in the face of the changing economic, social, and cultural realities of the United Kingdom during World War I and after. Another series created by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, The Gilded Age, was no less famous.

The HBO show became a new phenomenon in the historical drama genre, and was a combination of Downton Abbey and Succession, telling the story of the clash between Old and New Money during the heyday of America in the titular period.

But while we wait for new episodes of the second season of the masterpiece that is The Gilded Age, we encourage you to check out the equally great new historical dramas available to stream this November.

This May, an incredibly inspiring yet heartbreaking biographical drama about one of the heroines of World War II, Miep Gies, premiered on National Geographic and later on Apple TV+ and Hulu. Working for Jewish businessman Otto Frank, she hid his family (including Anne Frank) and Dutch Jews from the Nazis. Gies was also the one who gave Anne's diary notes to her father, Otto, upon his return from a concentration camp.

Where to stream: Prime Video ( via MGM+)

The British-Italian historical television series Domina was released in 2021. The series is a dramatization of the life of one of the most powerful women of the early first millennium AD, the wife of the Roman Emperor Octavian Augustus, Livia Drusilla. It is the story of how a young girl who, like her father, wanted to restore the republican system in Rome and opposed Augustus, became his wife and, as a result, a powerful empress. The new season aired between July and August and is available in the U.S. on Prime Video.

3. Bodies (2023, 1 season)

Where to stream: Netflix

This British crime thriller is not your typical historical drama, as it combines the sci-fi elements of time travel and touches on the post-apocalyptic future! However, it also covers other time periods and presents a great costume drama in several historical settings. The events of the series, based on the DC Vertigo graphic novel of the same name, span four timelines, the 1890s, 1940s, 2020s, and 2050s, within which four detectives investigate a similar murder that occurred in London.

2. The Long Shadow (2023, miniseries)

Where to stream: Sundance Now

Next episode: November 16

The Long Shadow can't be described as a typical historical series either, as it is a true crime drama, but it is one of the finest examples of a superb rendering of the atmosphere of the past as events unfold in Yorkshire in the 1970s. The plot covers the five-year cat-and-mouse game between the British police and the notorious serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, nicknamed the Yorkshire Ripper, referring to the crimes of the infamous Victorian maniac Jack the Ripper.

1. For All Mankind (2019, 4 seasons)

Where to stream: Apple TV+

Next episode: November 17

Well, this Apple TV+ original isn't a conventional history show either, as it presents the events of an alternate reality. In For All Mankind, the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union never ended, leaving NASA and the space agencies of other countries in a race to conquer the solar system. But despite its 'what if' setting, it's an epic space adventure whose writers mirrored the events of the Cold War.
