Nobody Would Watch The Cursed Child Movie, According to Reddit
Fans say they would rather watch a movie based on a tree than The Cursed Child.
With Warner Bros. Discovery CEO publicly announcing plans to produce a new installment in the Harry Potter franchise while completely ignoring Fantastic Beasts, Wizarding World fans can't help but wonder whether the next Warner Bros. Harry Potter project will be the adaptation of widely criticized The Cursed Child.
Actually, rumor has it Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros. producer, once pitched a potential two-part adaptation of Harry Potter and The Cursed Child but J.K. Rowling blocked the idea.
And now, Zaslav has allegedly raised the prospect of adapting the script book again.
Voldemort's Dumbest Murder Ever Happened in Deathly Hallows
Harry Potter and The Cursed Child is actually a play based on a story created by J. K. Rowling and two co-authors, John Tiffany and Jack Thorne. Thorne wrote a theatrical adaptation. Many fans read it in a script book of the same name.
The book was promoted as "the eighth story in the Harry Potter series" when it appeared in stores, but Wizarding World fans prefer to ignore it, saying it is fanfiction and has no place in the canon.
The story happens many years after the Battle of Hogwarts and revolves around Albus Severus Potter, Harry's son, and his close friend Scorpius Malfoy (yes, he is a son of Draco Malfoy) using a version of the Time-Turner to go back in time and save Cedric Diggory's life. Their actions lead to catastrophic events.
10 Most Unnecessary Changes the Harry Potter Movies Made
The play was well-received by critics and won many awards. Besides, it brought a lot of profit, so a movie adaptation is what Warner Bros. would definitely want to explore. However, Harry Potter fans did not like the story at all. They felt it destroyed the canon and wrecked the image of major characters. So when asked on r/harrypotter Subreddit if they would watch a movie based on The Cursed Child, the majority replied with a very firm "no."
"I'd rather lick a cactus for the duration of the movie," one fan commented, and others agreed.
According to the discussion, Wizarding World fans are not opposed to a Harry Potter spinoff per se. Fans wouldn't refuse to watch a series based on the Marauders, a movie about the founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, or even a story filmed from the perspective of the Whomping Willow.
As fans note, Wizarding World has plenty of great stories to tell. So why adapt something as controversial as The Cursed Child? Luckily, neither J.K. Rowling nor the original cast seem interested in this adaptation.
