The conclusion of Willie and Simon's love story will be released in the spring of 2024.

Summary

  • Since 2021, Netflix subscribers have been enthralled by the Swedish teen drama Young Royals.
  • The third and final season was announced back in December 2022, but now we know the release date — March 2024.
  • While details are still scarce, Willie and Simon will face even more challenges in balancing the status of the former and their feelings.

Unfortunately, European series do not receive much attention in the U.S. and global market, being inferior to the shows produced by the Anglophone industry, and not infrequently South Korean, which decisively win the hearts of viewers around the world.

Nevertheless, given Netflix's strong emphasis on foreign productions, some European projects have found a fair share of success, especially those in the teen drama genre: one can recall, for example, the enormous success of the Spanish series Elite, which even received an Indian Hindi adaptation called Class.

There is something special about teen series that focus on private elite schools that keeps viewers coming back for more. In particular, the Swedish series Young Royals has been making waves for two seasons now. The series has managed to offer much more than just the intrigue of privileged teenagers, as the plot is not afraid to portray students, none of whom are clearly good or bad characters. They are all real people with their positive and negative traits.

Despite the campy premise, both seasons of Young Royals have been rapturously received by critics and viewers thanks to its great queer representation and character study. Everyone is eagerly awaiting the third and final season, and Netflix has finally announced its release date.

Netflix Announced the Final Season Release Date

The season was announced in December 2022 and filmed from April to June 2023 — as a Swedish production, the series was not affected by the American WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

However, while the second season was released about six months after principal photography was completed, the final season was delayed much more, by about a few months. In October, Netflix Nordic released the first look at Season 3 and shared that it will be released in 2024.

Now, according to Netflix's official account on X (ex-Twitter), an official release date of March 2024 has finally been revealed.

What Do We Know About the Season So Far?

No further details about the series have been released beyond what was shown in the clip. As such, it is still not confirmed how many episodes the upcoming season will contain, but there is no reason to doubt that it will be the same number of six episodes.

As for the story itself, series co-creator and head writer Lisa Ambjörn shared her thoughts about the series and her intentions with Tudum in December last year.

'I've always imagined Young Royals being told in three parts and because of the fans' dedication to our story, we get to tell the last one. The ending has been clear to me from the start and I’m so thankful and honored to get to finish this tale as intended,' she said.

In other words, instead of rushing all the storylines to a conclusion because of Netflix's decision, the writers will deliver a well-crafted story that will definitely not leave fans unsatisfied.

As for the events themselves, we'll have to keep our fingers on the pulse for a while and stay in eager anticipation. After all, Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) will have to deal with more burdensome issues concerning family, a royal future and openly acknowledging his love for Simon (Omar Rudberg). Only the latter, who has a much more down-to-earth background, isn't too thrilled about such widespread public attention, judging by the trailer. Will the guys be able to keep their relationship alive no matter what?

Well, Willmont fans, don't scream, don't cry, and certainly don't throw up — save yourselves for the upcoming drama that will catch up with us in March 2024!
