Newest Outlander Season 7 Update Warns About Darkest Episodes Yet
Brace yourselves.
Summary
- Outlander S7 Part 1 ended on a cliffhanger as Roger followed his kidnapped son back in time
- Though we know what happens in the novels, the Starz show is likely to deviate from that road map
- Quotes from the creative team have fans fearing for their favorite characters.
Season 7 of Outlander has been split into two, with the second batch of episodes landing at a still-unspecified date in early 2024. Though Outlander's heroes have faced horrendous obstacles in the past, clues from the show's cast and producers have hinted at even darker days to come.
Where Did We Leave Off?
As the first half of season 7 wrapped, the Fraser family was separated by space and time.
Discovering that their daughter Mandy was born with a heart defect, Roger and Brianna knew that the only way to get her the medical care she needs is to travel back to – and live in – the 20th century. They settled happily in 1980s Scotland, even managing to purchase ancestral home Lallybroch, but things didn't stay serene for long.
Knowing that Jemmy could guide him to the gold hidden near Fraser's Ridge, Rob Cameron nabbed Roger and Brie's son with the intent of bringing him to the stones and back in time. Season 7 Part 1 ended with a cliffhanger as Roger and Buck decided to follow Cameron into the past, leaving Brianna and Mandy alone in the 80s.
Meanwhile, Jamie and his Sassenach wife boarded a ship for Scotland and are also headed for Lallybroch, albeit 300 years earlier.
What Happens in the Books?
The upcoming Part 2 will follow the events of the seventh and eighth Outlander books, An Echo in the Bone and Written in My Heart's Own Blood.
Spoilers ahead!
In the novels, Claire doesn't spend long in Scotland before being asked to perform a life-or-death surgery on Marsali and Fergus' son Henri-Christian, who is in Philadelphia. After a brief separation, Jamie plans to follow after Claire – but when he misses the ship he was meant to take and it sinks, Claire believes her husband to be dead.
However, intrepid fan-detectives have pointed out that neither Marsali (Lauren Lyle) nor Fergus' (Cesar Domboy) are on the cast list for Part 2, so it's possible the show has altered this plotline.
Dark Skies Ahead
Executive producer Matthew B. Roberts spoke recently on the official Outlander podcast about the upcoming episodes, and warned:
'It's like a rollercoaster, some episodes are going to have you high as a kite and we're going to bring you down and you're going to be as low as possible… And when I say low, I mean emotionally wrecked as we try to do…There's battles on the horizon, both in war, guns, cannons, but also emotional battles. And I will say some of the most poignant, emotional battles are coming up in the back half that I can't wait for you guys to see.'
Of course, if you've stuck with Outlander this long you know that emotional battles are nothing new. But it sounds like S7 P2 might be going further than the show has ever gone before. Back in June 2023, Caitriona Balfe told the ATX TV Festival:
'There's a scene, there's a sequence of scenes that were really, really challenging. I think my [low point] was trying to figure out how we were going to do it and it was really tough…there was a big struggle about how we were going to do it… I think that's the first time in my life with work and especially on the show that I was like, 'I actually don't know how I'm going to do this'.'
Given the litany of death, torture, and abuse that has rained down on the Frasers, this doesn't bode well for our favourite characters. What could be worse than what they've already gone through?
We're waiting with bated breath to find out.
