Warrior Nun’s future as a movie trilogy made without the original creator Simon Barry spells trouble for the franchise…in the short term. In the long term, it’s really good.

Summary:

  • Warrior Nun was Netflix ’s highest-rated original show until it was axed by the streamer.
  • The new owners of the show plan to turn Warrior Nun into a movie trilogy without Simon Barry.
  • If fans stand against the new trilogy and support Barry, they can fight for a better future for Warrior Nun.

The story of Warrior Nun is one absolute unit of an emotional rollercoaster. It started as an absolute win, becoming Netflix’s highest-rated original show. Then, it was suddenly canceled. Then, after long and valiant Halobearer protests, it found a new home. And after all that, the future of Warrior Nun became grim once again.

The latest updates on the franchise destroyed fans’ enthusiasm and turned the whole story upside down: no longer is it viewed as a fan win but rather a devastating blow for Warrior Nun’s fans, cast, and creator. Here’s what happened, in short.

How Did Warrior Nun End Up in This Situation?

Created by Simon Barry, Warrior Nun was released in July 2020 as a Netflix original series. The success of the TV show allowed for its renewal for Season 2 which quickly became the streamer’s highest-rated original in history. With a large fan base, things were looking great for Warrior Nun — until suddenly, they weren’t.

After Season 2, Netflix axed the show, and fans were in despair. Halobearers and Warrior Nun’s Simon Barry spent many months actively petitioning for the series’ continuation, and Barry managed to find a new “home” for his creation. Fans were cheering: Warrior Nun became the first-ever show to survive Netflix’s slaughter!

The next updates were the beginning of the end. Warrior Nun will be made into a movie trilogy, not a TV show. Simon Barry will not be involved with the project. The cast will most likely be fully replaced. It was becoming increasingly clear that the new masters of Warrior Nun had no idea what to do with the franchise, and it was scary.

But really, it’s not as terrible as it looks.

Why Is Warrior Nun’s Demise a Positive in the Long Run?

The ultimate truth is the Warrior Nun the Movie Trilogy will almost inevitably fail. Everything Halobearers know and love came from Simon Barry who was not hired back to work on the new version of the franchise. Without him, Warrior Nun will lose the distinct qualities that made it such a successful TV show in the first place.

Much like Netflix, the new production company will likely rely on the algorithms and “the Marvel rulebook”: throw a ton of money to make a sterile and soulless generic story about the good guys fighting the evil guys. This approach doesn’t even work for the MCU anymore — and it will work even worse for such a different project as Warrior Nun.

Warrior Nun was never afraid of breaking the rules: the show questioned religion in favor of faith, had well-established queer characters, and avoided painting anything black-and-white. Long story short, Warrior Nun never mistook its audience for a bunch of idiots incapable of critical thinking — and that’s why they loved this series.

So yes, the new trilogy will most likely absolutely bomb. But it’s great for the franchise’s future and its legacy. Warrior Nun will make a strong and compelling case proving that algorithms are not the ultimate truth, and unique and distinctive creators should be given room and resources. Corporations don’t understand art; people do.

Apart from the general industry statement, the case of Warrior Nun could help the franchise itself. After the movie’s failure, it will be apparent that the fan base is still there, waiting for the real Warrior Nun — and that a lot of money can still be made off it from the corpo viewpoint. But it will also be clear that Halobearers won’t tolerate a sterile iteration of their favorite franchise, so Simon Barry will be called back in.

One thing is self-evident: for Warrior Nun to flourish in the future, it must fail now. With Barry gone, Halobearers have to arm for a new battle — the battle against the trilogy’s masters. Only by standing by the original show and its creator and rejecting the new iteration can we achieve a better future for Warrior Nun…and flip a finger to the algorithm-driven content machine that’s already buried one too many franchises.
