Out of nowhere, a new Lord of the Rings movie was recently announced — and with the most surprising premise, too! The upcoming movie will focus on the person we know as Gollum — but more specifically, on the person he used to be before turning into that nauseating creature. Gollum was once called Smeagol, and it’s his story the movie seeks to finally explore after so many years.

What Will the Gollum Movie Be All About?

Recently, Peter Jackson, Andy Serkis, and Philippa Boyens sat down with Deadline to discuss the unexpected Lord of the Rings prequel. The original trilogy’s team is eager to get back in action, and they gladly revealed what few details have been set in stone so far. The most obvious question is, why make a Gollum movie at all?

“We really want to explore [Gollum’s] backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films. It’s absolutely thrilling to <...> deep-dive into [Tolkien’s] world again, and specifically into Gollum’s psychology. I know we’re all interested in investigating on a deeper level who that character is,” Jackson and Serkis shared.

The Gollum Movie Will Welcome Old Friends

Watching Smeagol turn into Gollum could indeed prove to be a captivating experience different from The Lord of the Rings we’ve grown to love over the decades. But we know what you’re thinking: will any other iconic characters return? What events will be unfolding around Smeagol? Here’s what we know so far.

“Gollum’s life span takes place in such an interesting period of Middle-earth. <...> It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from Professor Tolkien. We are having very early state script discussions and ideas of <...> how [Gollum] comes into contact with other characters,” Boyens, Jackson, and Serkis elaborated.

It’s clear that some iconic characters will return in the new movie, but its creators are not yet ready to commit by naming them. They’ll have to see where the script takes them and which actors are available to reprise their roles, so for now — no promises.

But you know what you can definitely pick up from that interview and what’s genuinely exciting? The Gollum movie was described as the first pick to “mine Middle-earth mythology for the first of two new films.” Two new films, folks. There will be another after Smeagol’s prequel, though we have no idea yet what it could be.
