Fallout boss Todd Howard doesn’t feel like the next chapter should be a priority.

The release of Prime Video ’s TV show Fallout has immediately drawn all the eyes to the original video games series. OG fans dived right back into the familiar world, and new Vaulties donned their Vault suits for the first time — for the past few months, we’ve been witnessing the Fallout Renaissance, and we’re very much down for it.

Most fans assumed that under such circumstances, working on and releasing Fallout 5 would become a priority for Bethesda boss Todd Howard… But he didn’t think so.

Todd Howard Says, There’s No Rush

Bethesda Softworks has held the rights to the Fallout IP since 2007, but the latest singleplayer game was released back in 2015 — almost a decade ago. Fans have long been demanding the next installment, but it seems like even the TV show’s overwhelming success can’t make Todd Howard hurry up for the gaming culture.

“For other Fallout games in the future, you know, obviously I can’t talk about those right now, but I would say, <...> we don’t feel like we need to rush any of that. The Fallout TV show fills a certain niche in terms of the franchise and storytelling,” the Bethesda boss explained in his recent interview with MrMattyPlays.

New Fallout May Be Many Years Away

There are several reasons why, if Howard decided against speeding up the process after the TV show’s success, there’s little to no chance of us seeing the next game in the near future. First and foremost, the studio is currently busy with Fallout 76, the 2018 multiplayer game set in the same universe which, unfortunately, does not scratch the itch of the good old singleplayer RPGs.

Then, there’s 2023’s Starfield, the disastrous flop of cosmic scale that needs to be fixed as soon as possible considering it’s now almost universally hated. And of course, there’s the issue of The Elder Scrolls 6: another massive IP held by Bethesda that hasn’t received a new singleplayer game since 2011’s Skyrim and is much higher on the studio’s priority list.

Even TES 6’s first teaser trailer has turned six years old recently, and there have been no updates about it in that timeframe — and it’s supposed to be a priority project for Bethesda. So since Todd Howard doesn’t intend to hurry up the production of Fallout 5, we’re in for an excruciatingly long wait, folks.
