New Alita Update Sparks Hope For Sequel Despite First Movie's Flop
The chances of this underrated great movie finally getting a sequel just got a lot better.
Alita: Battle Angel, a cyberpunk action movie based on the Battle Angel Alita manga series by Yukito Kishiro, was released in 2019.
Directed by Robert Rodriguez, the film featured an impressive cast, including Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, and many others, as well as rising star Rosa Salazar, who portrayed the titular cyborg.
Unfortunately, it received a mixed reception from critics and underperformed at the box office, leaving little chance for a sequel.
In the end, however, the film received surprisingly positive reviews from average viewers, who praised the actors' performances, Rodriguez's signature action, and considered the film to be by far one of the better American live-action adaptations made in recent years.
This led to a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 61% from critics.
The movie also had surprisingly intense and gruesome fight scenes, as far as PG movies go, which allowed for a unique contrast between Alita's sweet personality and her ruthless military cyborg origins.
Naturally, fans have been clamoring for a sequel, and now it looks like they may finally get their wish.
The film's executive producer Jon Landau recently revealed that "they're working on it" and are currently in talks with Rodriguez and Salazar.
Considering that both, as well as Christoph Waltz, have already expressed their desire to continue the story, and that according to Landau "all is good," Alita 2 now has a good chance to see the light of day.
The fans are very happy about this surprising, but absolutely welcome turn of events. They keep their fingers crossed and hope that the negotiations will lead to a positive result.
Fans are also hoping that the creators will be able to bring back the original cast, including Edward Norton, as the first movie ended on a big cliffhanger, revealing him as the main villain Nova.
Although the sequel is not 100% greenlit yet, with this update the chances of it happening have increased significantly and fans are waiting for further confirmation.
