A captivating historical fiction for your weekend watch.

Summary:

  • Alias Grace is one of the best short series ever created on Netflix.
  • It tells a very difficult story of an Irish immigrant in 19th-century Canada.
  • The story is based on Margaret Atwood's eponymous novel.

The year 2017 was a great year to be a Margaret Atwood fan, as it gave us The Handmaid’s Tale, which turned into a successful hit on Hulu … and a second overlooked gem.

Several months after The Handmaid’s Tale premiered on Hulu, another miniseries based on Atwood's novel was released on Netflix. In November 2017, the world got to see historical limited series called Alias Grace.

The show enjoys a whopping 99% on Rotten Tomatoes (mind you, The Handmaid’s Tale only has 83%). Alias Grace is a must watch for those who love mystery, history and… crime dramas.

At the center of this drama is a girl named (surprise surprise) Alias Grace, who is accused of murdering her own employer.

However, it seems that the case is not that simple, and finding out the truth will be a much more difficult task. Especially now that Grace's mental state is being questioned by a psychiatrist…

The main character is played by a brilliant, though unfortunately very underrated actress, Sarah Gadon. However, for this role the actress was actually universally praised, with many considering her performance to be worthy of an Emmy.

The series keeps you on the edge of your seat from the start and till the end of it. The storytelling is very powerful and the many plot twists just keep you in suspense all the time.

Alias Grace makes you question everything that characters do and say, and that’s just as annoying as hypnotizing.

“I'm glad I found it. It's on a different level than the majority of shows out right now. Its pace is slower but it would not be the show it is if it wasn't. The characters are everything you like but different then you expect. The acting makes me RE-remember how much I like this type of drama given how many have come out and failed at it,” Redditor deepseededhate said.

Alias Grace is available to stream on Netflix.
