Netflix's Newest Mystery Crime Drama Already Topping Platform’s Global Chart
A rather fresh take on the well-known genre.
What makes a great TV show? Well, the list of criteria is huge but sometimes it’s just absolutely not necessary to check boxes, but to rather rely on your gut and the feeling “whether I liked it or not.”
There are some things you expect to see in every genre of a series, though. If it’s a crime drama, there should be a crime (thanks, Captain Obvious), an antagonist, a protagonist, and it’s better to have at least some mystery involved. Most of the time all the people in such dramas are grownups with a lot of baggage.
However, Netflix ’s new mystery crime drama/thriller is something so different that it confuses you. The new French limited series called Anthracite premiered on the platform on April 10 and is already on Netflix’s global chart as one of the most popular shows, currently sitting at #6.
The premise of the show sounds pretty simple, though. At the center of it is a main character, who stumbles on an old murder case which leads her to another new crime. But the role of the main investigator is not given to some devoted detective with a backstory.
The main character of the series is a quirky zoomer named Ida who lives on her cell phone and is always online. You'd think the girl was from another planet, that's how out of sync she seems to be with the rest of the show's universe. All the other characters are rather serious people with a way of life that is too different.
The story revolves around two murders, as already mentioned, but it seems that there were more than two. Jaro Gatsi is accused in the murder that took place in 2024, simply because he was living somewhere near the place where it happened. And now Ida turned it into her life mission to find a way to save him.
The thing about the show is that you can never predict where it’s going. From the beginning of the series you see the goofy manner the story is told, you see Ida being a total weirdo, so when it takes you to the darkest places you are left confused.
Well, better watch it once, right? Don't miss your chance to stream Anthracite on Netflix while it’s still all the rage.
