This movie proves that we should give Netflix a chance.

On September 6, Netflix released the crime thriller Rebel Ridge, which has already received critical acclaim and has even been named one of the best action movies of the year, with a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

What Is Rebel Ridge About?

Terry arrives in the town of Shelby Springs to post bail for his cousin. But right in the middle of the road, he is stopped by police officers who look downright unfriendly. Despite Terry's full cooperation, the officers confiscate his money bag for no reason and let him go.

Perhaps, under different circumstances, this robbery would not have reached the critical point of no return, resulting in a bitter feud between the intruder and the local police. But for the guy, the events take on a fundamental nature, so he, having enlisted the support of almost the only honest person in town, the court clerk Summer, goes on the warpath with corrupt cops.

Rebel Ridge Won't Give You a Sea of Blood, But It Will Give You a Strong Thriller

Inspired by the cult movie First Blood starring Sylvester Stallone, Rebel Ridge is a far cry from bloody action movies like John Wick where the body count is in the hundreds. Terry does his best to avoid confrontation, using violence only when absolutely necessary.

Aaron Pierre's character is more like the reasonable Jack Reacher from the series of the same name than the uncontrollable killing machine John Rambo.

The creators of the film do not rely on a killer action, whose presence is deliberately minimized, but on the tension of the situation, which only grows stronger as the events unfold. Thus, the viewer is not even presented with a dynamic action movie, but a 100% crime thriller.

Rebel Ridge Is One of the Best Netflix Movies

Director and screenwriter Jeremy Saulnier achieves maximum suspense thanks to a well-constructed narrative that holds your attention and makes you wait for the denouement. The topic of police brutality runs through the whole story and appeals to our sense of justice.

But even at the climax, when Terry is forced to take up arms and we are already anticipating the inevitable karma, Saulnier tries to adhere to conditional realism, refusing superheroism on the part of the main character.

Rebel Ridge is a solid crime thriller that deserves the viewer's attention. Thanks to movies like this, viewers' faith in Netflix is getting restored – as it turns out the streaming giant is still capable of producing something more worthwhile than faceless movies with scripts made by AI.
