Netflix's Hit With 4.8M Views Unlikely to Get Season 2 For a Simple Reason

Even though almost everyone is used to the short 8 to 10 episode seasons and the miniseries format, some people still long for TV shows to be longer.

The previous format of a long season of 22 to 25 episodes, including some fun filler to build the universe, was much longer to produce, but did a much better job of immersing viewers in the fictional world. Even if that world isn't all that different from reality.

Perhaps this desire for longer stories is what drives fans of miniseries and limited series to lobby for a continuation. This has already happened with HBO's Big Little Lies and The White Lotus, and now eager viewers are after Netflix 's latest hit, One Day. But they may be in for a big disappointment.

Is One Day Renewed for Season 2?

With 4.8 million views on Netflix, One Day has established itself as a certain success. Though many didn't take the show too seriously at first, considering that the same novel by David Nicholls had already been adapted into a 2011 movie starring Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway, it has exceeded everyone's expectations.

Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall as Emma and Dexter have shown perfect chemistry in both the romantic and comedic aspects of the series, keeping viewers hooked from the very first episode to the heartfelt finale. The cast wasn't the only thing that helped the show earn a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

From the premise that was established in the original novel, but balanced in a screenplay for the sake of adaptation, to the nuances of human emotion beautifully captured in both the writing and the acting, One Day was deemed a smashing success and the perfect show to binge on.

With such great reviews, it's hard to believe that Netflix won't take the chance to make more money out of this story. Season 2 is less likely to happen, however, simply because there is no written material to cover. The miniseries explored the entirety of David Nicholls' novel, and anything added on top of that will not be of the same quality.

Of course, following the example of HBO's The White Lotus, the production team could have made One Day an anthology series, cast a different pair, and gone through the struggle again, but with different leads, a different writer, and a different premise, nothing could guarantee the same results for season 2.
