Netflix 'Optimistic' on Hemsworth as Geralt, Fans Question Their Sanity
The Witcher fandom is looking forward to the release of The Witcher series Season 3.
It will officially be the last to star Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia but this is when the fans will be able to bid the farewell to the actor, who have portrayed the monster-fighting witcher for three seasons. And while Cavill's departure from the Netflix project is seen as a tragedy by most of the show's fans, the network seems to be absolutely sure Liam Hemsworth will be as good as Cavill.
In his recent interview with Variety, Netflix's head of U.S. and Canada scripted series Peter Friedlander has said that Hemsworth "will be an extraordinary Geralt". When asked "what was the decision there to not end it with Henry and to instead continue it and recast, Friedlander said exactly this.
"Henry is an extraordinary Geralt and I think Liam will continue and also be an extraordinary Geralt. There has been a legacy of amazing, iconic characters where the actors have changed and we're hugely optimistic about this."
He also added that Netflix will continue to honor the IP, the fans as well as the storytelling. Really? Didn't Cavill leave because the production team had no respect for the books?
Previously, The Witcher series producer Lauren Hissrich shared her thoughts on Hemsworth taking over from Cavill. In an exclusive interview with Total Film, she said that she had no doubts that Hemsworth will do a great job. She is sure that the fans will love it.
"I think that it's just a new chapter for us. And I think new chapters bring new energy and that people will find things to love," Hissrich said.
She also spoke to Collider ahead of the December 25 release of The Witcher: Blood Origin spin-off and mentioned how excited she was to get down to working on The Witcher Season 4.
"Honestly, I'm really excited for Witcher Season 4. I think it's going to be fantastic. I can't wait to get started," she said.
But fans just don't share her excitement and enthusiasm. Most of The Witcher community believe that this is a tragedy and no one was expecting it coming their way. Following Cavill's latest announcement on Instagram, which says that he's not returning as Superman for the DCEU, the fans suggested there should be another turnaround. Cavill should return as Geralt for Season 4 while it is Hemsworth who should be kicked off from The Witcher and hired by Gunn to play Superman.
The fans argue that Liam Hemsworth "can't act his way out of paper bag" and that he owes his successful career to his older brother's name. One of the fans posted a very angry comment on a Reddit thread saying that they would be canceling their Netflix subscription, calling Hemsworth taking over from Cavil "a joke."
The commenter believes Netflix ruins everything they touch and the hope is Season 3 will fail so Season 4 and the whole franchise will be cancelled altogether.
"I hope Liam Hemsworth will be replacing me as a Netflix subscriber," one of the fans joked.
