Netflix Canceled This Brilliant Horror Comedy in 2019, but Fans Are Still Fuming
Letting go was never this hard.
It’s always tricky to say goodbye to things you never wanted to give up in the first place. Anything done on demand makes you annoyed and wanting to punch those responsible for your decisions. So when Netflix cancels a popular original series, fans go furious.
Mixing genres is not easy, but sometimes something really beautiful can come out of this approach. Like it happened with the series called Santa Clarita Diet that premiered in 2017.
The show features two amazing actors Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant as the main couple, Sheila and Joel Hammond. The married couple is from a small city in California, Santa Clarita, and they both are real estate agents.
They live a happy life, but one day something terrible happens that changes everything forever. Sheila started becoming…. a zombie! Now the two of them have to find out a way to keep that a secret, which is pretty hard because of her cravings of a human flesh and the personality changes she goes through. Needless to say, Barrymore and Olyphant portrayed perfect on-screen chemistry and played their roles brilliantly.
Why Do Fans Love Santa Clarita Diet?
The actors’ amazing performance and the well-written storylines are just a few things that helped the show's season 1 become a hit among the audience and the critics as well. The way the creators managed to blend horror and comedy together was just perfect.
“I watched the whole season despite my horror avoidance. It was a little too gory for me, but it was too funny not to continue,” Redditor myspoonsareallgone said.
Why Was Santa Clarita Diet Canceled?
But apparently something went wrong after season 1, as the series’ numbers weren’t as good during the next two seasons. While still being loved in general, the show faced a rating decrease, so the streaming giant decided to cancel it in 2019.
It was later revealed that the show was canceled because of Netflix’s “cost-plus” budget model, which means that the series was created mostly with investor money and wasn’t bringing in as much as it did before, and also became significantly more expensive to produce.
Even now, 5 years later, the fans still can't talk about it without anger. In every Reddit thread discussing the series they talk about boycotting the platform and signing all possible petitions to make Netflix bring the show back.
Well, the approach is not that stupid, as it’s a known fact that the streaming service sometimes brings back canceled shows if they see a demand from fans. So who knows, maybe one day we’ll see Santa Clarita Diet season 4, especially since the previous chapter ended on a major cliffhanger…
