The world's most popular zombie series is almost back with a new spin-off.

Now, in addition to Joel and Ellie, we also get to follow longstanding adversaries Negan and Maggie.

The announcement of the new Walking Dead spinoff, made before the end of the last season of the original series, actually undermined some of the tension for fans — even Jeffrey Dean Morgan agrees on that.

Since viewers already knew that Negan and Maggie would definitely survive The Walking Dead finale, it really took away the suspense; but this doesn't seem to be the only problem with the upcoming spinoff.

The show's creators promise that the continuing story will be significantly different from the original series. First, the setting shifts from the woods of the south to New York City, where the heroes travel in search of Maggie's missing son, Hershel.

In addition, the plot of the spinoff will take place eight years after the final season of The Walking Dead, guaranteeing changes to both the characters themselves and the world as a whole.

Fans are also looking forward to getting to know Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan's characters a lot better, because unlike the original series, which focused on a lot of heroes at once, this time there will be only two of them — Maggie and Negan, against hordes of zombies.

Although the show is not yet on the air, there has been a lot of fan discussion about the series.

Many fans are surprised that the new series is repeating the kidnapping twist, since the original series ended with a kidnapping, and another spin-off Fear the Walking Dead also included the kidnapping of one of the main characters' daughters in the final season.

And it looks like fans of the franchise are already tired of the incessant abductions.

"So Fears final season is about a kidnapped daughter, this kidnapped son, TWD ended with a kidnapping plot…ugh," Twitter user DW3sty commented.

Some fans believe that Hershel's kidnapping is only necessary to justify the creation and existence of the spin-off, even though such a storyline doesn't seem catchy.

"I really don't want the reason of this NYC trip is about him [Hershel]. I mean it's too obvious and not surprising at all," Reddit user EvaChu_1030 said.

Still, fans are eagerly awaiting the spinoff, which will follow the franchise's two charismatic characters as they explore the stone jungle this time around.

Although there is no exact release date for The Walking Dead: Dead City, it is known that the wait will not be long — the series will be released in June 2023.
