NCIS Upcoming Spinoff Is a Rule-Breaker for the Whole Franchise
Some of the non-original characters are finally getting the attention they deserved all along.
Started back in 2003, the NCIS universe keeps growing as the franchise is set to get two more spinoffs that will arrive around the same time as the original show’s season 22, and one of those upcoming series already appears to be a significant milestone for the entire franchise.
The show titled NCIS: Tony & Ziva will dive deeper into the relationship of Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David, portrayed by Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo respectively, who quit the flagship series a while ago. Even ahead of the show’s premiere, the characters’ return seems to be something that the long-running franchise has surely needed all this time.
Set to be released later this year, NCIS: Tony & Ziva will find its characters in Europe after both of them decided to start their career paths afresh and will presumably follow the events after an attack on Tony’s security firm, but most importantly, the show will still revolve around the couple’s personal relationship that never got enough detail in the original series.
Tony and Ziva’s romance initially had quite a rocky nature as the couple had been in a hop-on/hop-off relationship for several seasons in a row, and when things between them got more certain, both came up with a decision to leave the team.
NCIS’ upcoming installment thus may potentially unveil more hidden details about the characters’ romance history that fans never got enough of in the original show.
On top of that, NCIS: Tony & Ziva’s arrival on TV will mark a huge milestone for the NCIS franchise. Not only will the upcoming show finally focus on specific characters’ story instead of a mere work location like it was with all the other spinoffs, but it will also let two non-original characters come up on the main stage.
Both Tony and Ziva have never been a part of the original NCIS team, with the former arriving in season 1 as a guest star and then proceeding to securing one of the leading roles, and the latter making her first appearance in season 3 becoming some kind of replacement for Caitlin Todd.
The upcoming spinoff will thus break two major rules of the whole franchise that before was giving more chances for proving themselves to those who have been in the original show since the very start, while also putting geographical locations of its departments on the front of each new installment.
NCIS: Tony & Ziva will arrive at CBS this fall.
