The show’s beloved character might be back, but not in a way you think about.

NCIS is coming back to the screens later this year with its season 22, and there might be more surprises than everyone is expecting right now. The last season’s finale left two major cliffhangers for the next installment, and fans are probably counting days until they finally get to see what happens to Jessica Knight after she accepts that big offer and whether Alden Parker’s vision will force the show to dive deeper into the character’s backstory.

However, NCIS’ next season might also highlight the return of an original character that was gone too soon by season 3, yet there are still some ways for them to make their way back to the show.

Started in 2003, NCIS featured Sasha Alexander’s Caitlin ‘Kate’ Todd as one of the Special Agents right until the season 2 finale, where she was shot dead by sniper and Mossad double-agent Ari Haswari, with Ziva David later taking over Kate’s duties in the following seasons. Since then, the character appeared only in a few episodes of the third season, but only as a projection watching her colleagues trying to cope with her tragic death.

To all the fans’ surprise and delight, Sasha Alexander recently reunited with her co-stars, Anthony DiNozzo and Ziva David’s actors Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, on their brand new podcast Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch on Spotify where the on-screen couple invites people who were involved in the original show in one way or another to re-watch its most memorable moments.

Though Sasha Alexander’s appearance on an NCIS-related podcast can’t really be considered a sign of her return to Kate Todd’s role in the franchise, especially after her character’s death, she may still return to the series itself, or even to her role in a different way.

Given that Kate Todd’s passing came as an utter shock to fans that really loved the character, NCIS might consider giving its audience a little gift by bringing Kate back, but as some sort of hallucination of one of the team members.

Additionally, even if such an option doesn’t work out for the show’s creators, Sasha Alexander can take up a different role and come back to the show as a director, which would be just fine given that she already has experience directing episodes in shows like Rizzoli & Isles, You and Bull.

Whatever option the NCIS crew might turn to, fans will surely be raving about the actress’ comeback to the CBS’ police procedural giant almost twenty years after she left it.
