'Multiverse of Madness' Levitates Past 'The Batman' to Become Highest-Grossing Movie of the Year
The caped crusader enjoyed two months of being the most commercially successful project of the year.
'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' ascended to the top of the year's highest-grossing movies list, having spent a little over two weeks in the theaters.
The interdimensional Doctor Strange sequel has amassed a total of $803 million, teleporting past 'The Batman ' and its worldwide haul of $768 million – to the discontent of the caped crusader's fans who hoped that Matt Reeves' movie would score $1 billion.
Marvel fans have predictably celebrated the milestone of the Doctor Strange sequel. However, some people argued that the masked vigilante has been a good rival in the theaters – unlike the majority of DC movies that embark on a mission to compete with MCU films.
There is a third camp that consists of people who actually enjoyed both movies.
While the Doctor Strange sequel is undoubtedly one of Marvel's biggest films of the year, it will certainly face some competition when it comes to the title of the highest-grossing movie of the year. In July, 'Thor: Love and Thunder ' is scheduled to hit screens, with 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ' to follow in November.
Most certainly, Marvel will have to brace for tough competition from 'Avatar: The Way of Water ' that premieres in December, given that the original movie managed to surpass 'Avengers: Endgame' as the highest-grossing movie of all time after its re-release.
